Stops
- Sarajevo 2 nights
Two days for Baščaršija, the museums on the siege and the viewpoints in the hills.
- Mostar 1 night
Tour buses fill the bridge area by day, while evenings and mornings are much calmer. The Blagaj tekke is a short taxi ride away.
- Dubrovnik 3 nights
Walk the city walls early in the morning or late in the afternoon. A short boat ride takes you to Lokrum island.
- Kotor 2 nights
The climb to the fortress is hard in the heat, so go when it is cool. Perast and the bay shore make a half day outing.
Getting between cities
- Sarajevo → Mostar: Train, about 2 h, 130 km
The train through the Neretva valley is scenic but infrequent. Buses take about as long.
- Mostar → Dubrovnik: Bus, about 3.5 h, 140 km
A few direct buses run daily, more in summer. Border checks can stretch the time.
- Dubrovnik → Kotor: Bus, about 2.5 h, 90 km
Buses follow the coast road. Expect long waits at the border in summer and leave slack in the day.
Times and distances are approximate. Check timetables and fares before you travel.
When to go
May, June and September are best. Dubrovnik and Kotor get very crowded in July and August.
