A short history of Skopje
Museum of the City of Skopje · Photo: Mazbln, CC BY-SA 3.0The clock on the wall of the old railway station is stopped at 5.17. The earthquake that destroyed the city struck at exactly that minute on the morning of 26 July 1963, and the surviving part of the building now houses the Museum of the City of Skopje. Much of the city was replanned after the quake, which is why the Ottoman bazaar, socialist-era buildings and very new structures stand side by side in the centre.
The Stone Bridge over the Vardar was built in the 15th century, in the Ottoman period. Cross it and the inns, baths and mosques of the Old Bazaar begin, with the fortress on the hill above. Mother Teresa was born in this city in 1910, and her memorial house is a few minutes from the square.
In the 2010s the "Skopje 2014" project added a large number of statues and neoclassical facades along the river, and opinion in the city is divided about them. Since 2019 the country's official name has been North Macedonia.
Skopje neighbourhoods
Millennium Cross · Photo: kallerna, CC BY-SA 4.0Bit Pazar, right next to the bazaar, is a big open-air market selling everything from vegetables to plastic slippers. It is crowded and noisy, and the stalls are at their fullest early in the morning.
Karpoš, to the west, is a residential district near the City Park that runs along the Vardar. Its cafés are local and prices a little lower than in the centre, a good base if you want to stay a few days and see the everyday side of the city.
Vodno is the mountain south of the city. A cable car takes you up to the Millennium Cross on the summit, there are hiking trails too, and at weekends people from Skopje escape up here. If you want to go a bit further, Matka Canyon is about half an hour by bus or taxi, and boats on the reservoir go as far as a cave.
Where to stay
- Macedonia Square: The city centre, within walking distance of the Stone Bridge and the bazaar.
- Old Bazaar (Čaršija): Ottoman inns, mosques and grill houses, full of atmosphere.
- Debar Maalo: A calm neighbourhood full of restaurants and cafés.
When to visit Skopje
Skopje gets properly hot in summer. In July and August afternoons above 35 °C are normal, the city empties at those hours and life moves to the bazaar and the riverside in the cool of the evening.
Spring, from April to June, and autumn, from September to October, are the best times for a visit. Days are 18-28 °C and walks on Vodno and at Matka are pleasant. The Skopje Jazz Festival in October is a long-running event, and rooms can fill up early that week.
In winter temperatures drop below freezing and the city is known for air pollution, with smoggy days common from December to February. If you go in winter, build your plans around the bazaar's indoor spots and the museums. During Ramadan the evening crowds in the Old Bazaar are a sight of their own.
Food culture in Skopje
The Macedonian table is rich in vegetables. Ajvar, made from red peppers, is on every table, and šopska salad comes topped with grated cheese. Tavče gravče, considered the national dish, is beans baked in a clay pan, best at lunchtime.
In the bazaar small grilled sausages called kebapi are eaten with onion and bread, and burek with yoghurt is common in the morning. Pastrmajlija from Štip, like a pide topped with meat, is worth trying once. Wines from the Tikveš region and rakija round off the evening meal, and reds made from the Vranec grape are well known.
Lunch is late and dinner starts around 20:00. Leaving around 10 percent or rounding up the bill is the norm.
Skopje trip budget
Skopje is one of the most affordable capitals in the Balkans. The currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). With a hostel bed and meals in the bazaar you can get through a day on about 2,500-3,500 MKD in 2026, while a mid-range hotel and restaurants take it to 5,000-8,000 MKD and a comfortable trip to 12,000 MKD and up.
A single city bus ride is about 35-50 MKD in 2026, usually paid by card. Taxis are cheap, and a short ride in the centre costs 150-300 MKD. The Vodno cable car is around 100-150 MKD, and a portion of kebapi in the bazaar 250-400 MKD.
The Stone Bridge, the fortress walls, the lanes of the Old Bazaar and the riverside walk are free. Stepping into the courtyards of the old inns costs nothing either.
Prices are approximate as of October 2026.
